What is included in the pergola kit, what else do I need to supply?
Structureworks Pergola kits include just about all of the materials needed to assemble your pergola. Typically, you will need to supply anchoring adhesive to secure your columns to a concrete surface or pressure treated blocking and wood screws to secure your columns to deck framing. For pergolas attaching to a building wall, you will need to supply the appropriate hardware to secure the ledger to the building wall. An average kit will need less than $50 in additional materials, all of which should be available at a local home center.

How difficult is the installation?
Whether you are an experienced pro or a weekend warrior, all Structureworks Pergola kits are designed for easy installation and come with illustrated instructions and unlimited free technical support over the phone. No advanced tools or skills are needed to install any of our standard pergola kits.

How long does it take to install a typical pergola kit?
With two people, installation of the pergola kit itself will typically take a professional contractor a day or less, do-it-yourselfers should plan on a one to two day installation. This is for an average size kit and does not include time to dig and pour footings or attach to deck framing.

What tools do I need to install the pergola?
The most commonly needed tools are listed below. A list of the exact tools needed for your pergola kit is included with the instructions.

  • 4′ Level
  • Measuring Tape
  • Framing Square/Speed Square
  • 8′ High Step Ladder (Two are recommended)
  • Hacksaw or Bolt Cutters
  • Socket Wrench with 9/16″ Socket and 3/4″ Deep Socket
  • Adjustable Wrench
  • Impact Driver with Phillips Bit
  • Drill
  • 5/8″ x 8″ Masonry Drill Bit
  • Circular Saw with Fine Tooth Blade
  • Shop Vacuum
  • Caulk Gun

What if I have questions during the installation, can you help me?
Absolutely! We offer unlimited free technical support through our toll free phone number by experienced professionals.

How do I attach a pergola to my house wall?
Attached pergolas typically include a ledger. The ledger will secure to your house wall using appropriate hardware for your wall type. The rafters of the pergola will attach to the ledger. Our estimators can provide attachment details and hardware recommendations.

How do I attach a pergola to my deck?
Our exclusive TensionRod Mounting System can be easily attached to deck framing with the addition of our universal deck framing mount adapter kit. This allows you to locate the columns for your pergola virtually anywhere on your deck while also ensuring your pergola will withstand all of the conditions nature can throw its way. For wood columns, you would simply bolt the columns to the deck framing.

How do I attach a pergola to my concrete or paver patio?

  • Our exclusive TensionRod Mounting System can be easily attached to a concrete patio or concrete footing by drilling a 5/8″ hole and using anchoring adhesive to secure the supplied threaded rod.
  • For paver patios, you will need to remove an area of your pavers, install a concrete footing to the top of the pavers, then reinstall the pavers around the new footing. This will give you a secure surface to attach to. The base trim supplied with our columns will then cover up the concrete footing and cut edges of the pavers to ensure a finished appearance.
  • For wood columns, you would attach a 6″ x 6″ Simpson bracket to concrete, and then secure the columns to the bracket.

Does the pergola kit come with instructions?
Yes. All Structureworks Pergola kits come with illustrated instructions that take you through the installation process step-by-step. Component and connection details are included so that you know what every part is called and how to put everything together. For custom structures, we supply detailed shop drawings that include column layout, component placement, and attachment details.

How many people are needed to install a pergola kit?
We recommend two people for a standard size pergola and three people for large or more complex custom pergola kits.

What if I need a pergola in a size that you don’t list?
We offer pergola kits in many pre-configured sizes that will accommodate most applications, however, if you need a specific size or a larger design than what we offer as a standard model, please contact one of our estimators and we will begin working on shop drawings and a quote to build a custom kit for you.

I have a specific design for a pergola or other outdoor structure, can you provide me with a price to make it?
We build custom structures and exterior products every day! Privacy screens, wall cladding systems, planters, shower enclosures, solar panel support systems, pavilions, and bicycle shelters are just some of the custom products we have experience manufacturing.

How do I measure a pergola and what do the sizes shown on your website mean?
Pergola sizes are typically communicated in one of two ways; either by the overall size of the top of the structure, or by the location of the column centers. We use the overall size of the top of the pergola as our standard size reference. Neither method is better than the other, it is just important to know what method is being used to ensure you get the proper size pergola kit. When comparing pergolas, ensure that you are using the same size reference.

What is the width and projection of a pergola?
The width and projection refer to the two most important size measurements of the pergola structure. We typically refer to the width as the direction the beam runs. The projection is usually the direction the rafters run. All width and projection dimensions refer to the overall length of the components running in that direction.

What colors are your pergolas?
Trex Pergola comes in the standard cellular PVC smooth white finish. We offer a selection of nine standard ColorLast finishes which coordinate with Trex decking and railing. Custom-paint tinting to match any color you wish is also available.

What texture/finish are the pergolas?
Trex Pergola is smooth in texture with a matte finish. When painted with our ColorLast process the texture and finish remain very similar.

Can I paint my pergola?
Yes, TrexTrim cellular PVC is an excellent material for paint and can be finished on site. We can also pre-finish your pergola using our ColorLast painting process, which uses a proprietary paint and complete process to ensure the paint adheres properly and provides a finish of unmatched quality.

How heavy are the pergola components?
Most pergola components typically weigh between 10 and 40 pounds. Trex Pergola beams can weigh between 75 and 150 pounds.

Do I need a permit for a pergola?
Maybe. This can depend on a few factors. Commercial outdoor structures commonly require permits with full engineering calculations. Residential outdoor structures are much more dependent on the locality you are building in. If you are in a high wind or snow area, it is more common for a pergola to require a permit. Other times it depends on the size of the structure. Many localities exempt all structures covering 150 square feet or less. To make it even more complicated, attachment of the structure can also play a factor in permitting requirements. If the pergola is to be attached to a building, a permit may be required, whereas if the pergola is freestanding, a permit would not be required. In short, discuss permit requirements with your contractor or local building office for a definitive answer. We do not know specific permitting requirements for any jurisdiction and cannot make assurances as to the suitability of our products for any specific jurisdiction.

Will you supply drawings and engineering calculations with a wet stamp?
Yes. We offer a complete permit-ready engineering plan set that can be obtained at no charge once you have purchased a pergola. This plan set will not include a wet stamp. If your building department requires a wet stamp, we can supply one for an additional charge.

I live in a high wind area, does your product meet my local code requirements?
Typically, yes. The original Trex Pergola model is designed to meet 160MPH exposure C wind loads. If you are in a higher wind zone or if you are interested in one of our other pergola kits, we can provide custom engineering, if needed.

I need a structure for a commercial application, will your product work?
Yes. All of our structures are designed to withstand the harsh conditions that structures in commercial and public settings can be subjected to.

Can I hang a porch swing or a hammock from my pergola?
No. Pergolas are designed to provide shade protection and are not built to handle a moving force like a swing or hammock. We are capable of building custom structures that can accommodate items such as swings. Please contact an estimator to discuss your project in detail.

Can I grow vines on a pergola?
Yes. Pergolas are excellent structures for growing vines. Adding vines can increase the shade and overall beauty of your outdoor structure. It is important to stay away from woody vines such as Wysteria, which can cause structural damage to even the strongest of outdoor structures.

I live in an extremely hot climate, will the pergola sag or fail in the hot weather?
All of our pergola kits are designed to withstand even the harshest conditions. Cellular PVC pergolas are susceptible to sagging in high heat, however, our structural pergola components are are reinforced with aluminum to ensure sagging does not become a problem. All of the pergola kits we sell can withstand the most harsh high heat conditions.

Can I add a solid roof to my pergola?
Typically, yes. We can add our fixed canopy system to most of our pergola kits for solid sun and rain protection. We can also build a custom outdoor structure with just about any solid roof design you would like. Please discuss this with your estimator as we can likely find a solution that will offer you the protection you desire while ensuring an appropriate design for your site conditions.

Can I add a light, fan, or other electrical device to my pergola?
Yes! These are very useful additions to your pergola. Often you can easily attach electrical boxes or brackets to any of the structural components on your pergola to secure an item such as a fan or light. In some cases, due to device size or precise control over the mounting location, you may wish to purchase some additional material for blocking purposes. With all of our pergola kits, you can chase wire through the core of the components to keep it hidden. Please discuss any device mounting or wire chasing requirements you have with you estimator in detail..

How does my order ship?
Small orders for parts and accessories will ship UPS Ground, packages are typically left at your door if no one is home at the time of delivery.
Large components and full structures ship unassembled via Old Dominion Freight Line. A delivery appointment (typically a two to four hour window) must be set with the carrier and you must be present to unload and inspect your shipment.

How will I know my order has shipped?
Tracking information will be emailed to you once your shipment has been scheduled to leave our factory.

How are freight orders unloaded?
For residential deliveries, your shipment will need to be opened on the truck and unloaded by hand. Please be sure to inspect and count every piece of the shipment as it is unloaded. Should you find any damaged or missing pieces, please note the quantity and specific pieces on the delivery receipt before signing it and call us at 877.489.8064.
For commercial deliveries, your shipment may be unloaded by hand, or if you have a loading dock and forklift, you may unload the shipment in its original packaging. It is important that you still inspect and count every piece of the shipment as it is unloaded. Should you find any damaged or missing pieces, please note the quantity and specific pieces on the delivery receipt before signing it and call us at 877.489.8064.

How many people are needed to unload the shipment?
Two people are recommended to ensure unloading is done safely and efficiently, however, one person capable of lifting 75 pounds could unload a smaller kit. The truck driver is not required to and should not be depended on to help unload the shipment, however, many of them will.

What does shipping cost?
Shipping within the continental US is free on all of our pergola kits and canopy systems for most locations. Individual components and special order items may be subject to special shipping rates. For shipping rates to Alaska, Hawaii, and all international locations, please contact an estimator for a quote on shipping to your location. We will need the delivery address and product information in order to obtain a shipping quote. If you are located in Canada, we are authorized to collect all Canadian taxes, so we can have shipments delivered directly to you without you having to deal with customs or a brokerage yourself!

What if I receive damaged, incorrect, or missing parts?
In the unlikely event that you receive your order and notice something incorrect or damaged, please contact us at 877.489.8064. If possible, we like to speak to you before you unload the shipment. If you are unable to reach us when receiving your shipment, please note the quantity and specific pieces that are missing or damaged on the delivery receipt before signing.

What do I have to do if something is damaged by the carrier in transit?
After you have noted the damaged pieces and quantities on the delivery receipt, we will need you to send this information, along with a few pictures showing the damage, to us via email. We want to minimize the inconvenience of damaged parts, we will start production on replacement parts right away and work with the carrier to resolve the freight claim. As long as this procedure is followed, you do not have to pay for replacement parts, nor do you have to file the claim with the carrier.

Can I pick my order up at your factory?
We are happy to have you pick up your order at our factory. All pergola kit orders are packaged for freight shipping and will be loaded with a forklift. Please discuss with your estimator the vehicle size and weight requirements for your order. There is no reduction in the price of the kit for orders which are picked up.
